Medicare’s Prescription Drug Program - Part D

Part D helps seniors and people with disabilities cover the cost of prescription drugs.

How do I become eligible for Part D?

You must have or qualify for:

  • Medicare Hospital Insurance - Part A or
  • Medicare Medical Insurance - Part B, or
  • Both Part A and Part B.

Signing up for Part D is optional.

How do I sign up for Part D?

To sign up, you need to join a Medicare-approved prescription drug plan.

Each plan covers different prescription drugs. Review each one carefully to find the plan that best meets your needs. Plans can change their cost and the drugs they cover each year. Learn more (PDF)

What should I consider when comparing plans?

  • Cost - Find out how much you will have to pay in premiums, deductibles, copays and coinsurance
  • Coverage - Get a list of the drugs covered by the plan, find out if you need prior authorization for some medications
  • Convenience - Find out if Medicare contracts with your pharmacy or if you can get your drugs through mail order

To find our more about what you should know before you sign up for a Part D plan, read "Things to think about when you compare Medicare drug coverage." (PDF)

Yearly enrollment: Part D enrollment occurs each November 15 through December 31. During this time, you may change plans, drop plans, or sign up.
